About Tuck, permissions and release plans
What is Tuck?
Tuck is a free menu bar manager for macOS. It hides the icons you rarely use, reveals them by click, hover, scroll or hotkey, and adds keyboard search and a separate Tuck Bar for notched displays.
Is Tuck free?
The core is free and licensed under GPL-3.0: hide, show and arrange menu bar items, with no account and no subscription. Tuck Pro is a planned one-time unlock for power features: profiles, triggers, automation, folders and per-display layouts. Pro is not on sale yet.
Which macOS versions does Tuck support?
Tuck requires macOS 26. It does not support macOS 14 or 15. Support for macOS 27 is in development and is covered on its own page.
Does Tuck work on macOS 27?
Not yet. macOS 27 support is in development, and Tuck targets macOS 26 today. The macOS 27 page explains what changed and lets you sign up to hear when support ships.
Does Tuck need Screen Recording?
No. Screen Recording is optional. Hiding, revealing and rearranging items all work without it. Grant it if you want live item previews and wallpaper-derived tinting; without it Tuck draws each item as its app icon.
Why does Tuck need Accessibility?
Tuck asks for Accessibility so it can detect menu bar items and move them. It is a powerful permission, so read the permissions guide before you decide. You can revoke it in System Settings at any time.
Does Tuck track me or need an account?
No. The app has no analytics, telemetry, tracking or sign-up. It keeps preferences on your Mac. Update checks fetch a feed from tuckmenubar.com, and the privacy page lists exactly what that request involves.
How is Tuck related to Ice and Thaw?
Tuck is a modified version of Thaw, which is derived from Ice. All three are GPL-3.0 projects. Tuck credits both upstream projects, and the licence page lists the credits.
Can Tuck help with icons hidden by the notch?
Tuck can show hidden items in a separate bar, the Tuck Bar, which is meant for notched MacBooks. Test it on your own display: no app can promise to recover every item or every system control.
Is Tuck signed and notarized?
The first public build is not released yet, so there is nothing to verify today. When it ships, the download page will show the signature and notarization checks you can repeat yourself.
Can I import my Bartender or Ice layout?
There is no importer for other apps. Importing and exporting Tuck profiles is planned for Pro. Write down your old layout, then recreate it in Tuck by dragging items into Visible, Hidden and Always-Hidden.
Can I use a different layout on an external display?
Per-display layouts and profile bindings are planned for Tuck Pro. The Displays pane in the free app already holds per-display settings. Dock, scaling and Spaces setups vary, so test yours.
Are triggers and automation on by default?
Triggers that reveal an item when a condition is met are planned for Tuck Pro. In the source, battery and power conditions are always available, and every other condition ships switched off and is enabled one at a time in Developer settings. Some are marked Experimental.
Can I control Tuck from Shortcuts, Alfred or a script?
Automation is planned for Pro. The source documents tuck:// links, such as tuck://toggle-hidden and tuck://search, that work from Shortcuts, Alfred, Keyboard Maestro, BetterTouchTool or a shell script. An official packaged Alfred workflow is on the roadmap.
Why use Tuck instead of macOS settings?
macOS lets you choose which items show and Command-drag to reorder them. That is enough for many Macs. Tuck adds hidden sections, search, a separate bar, hotkeys and appearance options for people who want more.
Will Tuck keep my icon order after a macOS update?
Tuck saves the order of your items, but no app can promise it survives every macOS or app update. Keep a screenshot of your layout before you update macOS, and check the changelog for compatibility notes.
Does Tuck offer managed deployment for companies?
No. Tuck is a utility for an individual Mac user. There is no device-management configuration, enterprise licence tier or support response-time commitment.
Where do I report a bug or a security problem?
Email support@tuckmenubar.com with your Tuck version, macOS build and display setup. For a security problem, use the same address and put “Security” in the subject. There is no response-time commitment.
How will updates work?
Tuck uses Sparkle for updates, with stable and beta channels published through one feed at tuckmenubar.com/appcast.xml. No release has been published yet.
How much will Tuck Pro cost?
The planned price is a one-time $12 USD, and it may change before launch. Pro is not on sale. Leave your email on the Pro page and you get one message when it is ready.
